A visual element can take the form of an image, a flow chart, a diagram or even a table with information. If you are going to create a new image for your final it should be clear and well enough developed that it communicates a specific point or gets across a particular idea. Technical writing employs visual elements as a way to support the material that is being written about.
Sometimes students worry that if additional images are not created in Visio that they will not receive credit. The syllabus requires that you use at least one Visio diagram but you may create images in other programs as well.
Visio was introduced to familiarize you with a very useful tool for creating visual elements that technical writers use frequently. However there are many other software programs that can accomplish the same task as Visio. In fact, with Microsoft PowerPoint you can create many of the exact same types of visual elements that you can create with Visio even though it may take significantly longer.
Other software programs that you may find useful include Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, SmartDraw, Adobe Fireworks, OmniGraff and many others. I encourage you to learn to create clearly designed and effective visual elements because of their importance. A good visual element can often make the difference between useful instructions and confusing instructions.
Please avoid using images that are purely for decoration. Technical manuals rarely use decorative images on any page but the cover of a manual or instruction set. Since the cover page for this assignment must meet APA requirements you will need to forego including any of those types of images. |
